River - Ibeyi
Animated Music Video
Spring 2020
Task
Create a 2D music video for an instrumental song. The challenge was finding a way to show different components of the song using geometric shapes.
Process
The song "River" by Ibeyi references a cleansing of the mind, and in animating a music video my intention was to capture a disorienting soul search.
The song is hypnotic. Organic elements are soothing, yet heavy percussion draws the attention back to structure. I wanted to capture that rhythm in geometric shapes and then maintain the fluidity with a hand movements. I animated the textured background with displacement to give it some fluidity, as if they are stars or sand. The hands I decided to mirror at the end, to gain the viewers trust that this was a reflection, only to be pulled in at the end.

Below is my rotoscoping process.

Result
This experimental piece was really maintained by the rotoscoping. Putting a human element in gave the song more meaning, and the mirroring effect allowed for a cleaner deign. The textures and overlays made the shapes more unrecognizable and clean as well, to better support the relationship between the hand drawn and the digital.
